  • 1. Research and Analysis

Budgetary research is the core to the activities of the Sanket Budget Centre. It critically looked into the trends of state government’s investment in different social and economic sectors in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattissgarh. Since these sectors form the foundation for overall development of the state, the investments in these sectors are very crucial. Budget analysis also help in understanding government’s commitments and priorities towards in improving basic human development conditions and welfare of weaker sections of the society.

Sanket Budget Centre covers the varied span of the budget analysis like,

  • Demystifying and analyzing budgets from different developmental perspectives;
  • Overall analysis of state budget with time trends for 10-15 years; 
  • Analysis of resource allocation and spending on priority sectors: social sectors like health, education, water supply sanitation, nutrition etc and on economic sectors like agriculture, rural development, irrigation etc;
  • Expenditure analysis of cross-cutting themes like gender budget analysis, child budget analysis, budgets for dalits and tribals;
  • Efficiency of utilization of budget utilization;
  • Public expenditure tracking from state, district, block and lowest units of field implementation;
  • Analysis of local body budgets  and plans for assessing levels of fiscal decentralization.

2. Information Sharing and Dissemination.
Information available with Sanket Budget Centre is open to be used by organizations, researchers, academicians, field practitioners, representatives of political parties, media persons, and also the govt officers etc. There is an increasing demand from the centre on budget related data and information from different stakeholders at state and district level. The publications on budget analysis are widely disseminated among different stakeholders both in hard and soft forms. Besides, numbers of workshops, consultations and meetings have been organized for wider dissemination of budget information and analysis. Sanket Budget Centre has developed dynamic information in the form of archival collection of economic and social information for more than a decade. It also has wide range of books dealing with contemporary issues, and newspaper clippings on issues dealing with social, economical and human development. We also have a collection of hard copies of the State Budget Books of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattissgarh since 2001-02.

3. Policy Advocacy
Sanket Budget centre has been actively engaged in pushing the policy advocacy of prime development concerns and budget analysis issues mainly with the state government, elected representatives, and others using research findings based on budget data analysis. Some of the key departments of the state government we have been closely associated with are Finance, State Planning Commission, Economics and Statistics, Agriculture and allied sectors, Education, Health, Women and Child Development, Rural Development. 

4. Training and Capacity building.
Another important activity Sanket Budget Centre embarks on is building capacities of local civil society organizations. The broad objective here is to undertake budget analysis in their core work and facilitates community monitoring through budget tracking at different levels. This encourage the use of budget analysis tool for enhancing skill, knowledge and efficiency in the domain areas of work and takes up emerging issues for advocacy purposes. This further helps in expanding the budget literacy among different stakeholders in the development sector.

5. Networking 

Sanket Budget Centre in the last few years has built a network of organizations across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and across India through its series of dissemination and capacity building activities, sharing of budget related information, participating in workshops in resource person capacity and handholding of organizations by supporting budget analysis in core work. We have been also associated with some of the Bi-lateral organizations like UNDP, UNICEF, Asian Development Bank, World Bank, Water Aid etc.
